Description
Climbing objectives in Antarctica include Vinson Massif, the high point of the continent (16,000+ feet), Mount Tyree (the second highest peak), the impressive rock spires in Queen Maud Land and thousands of other peaks.
Numerous companies run trips to Vinson each year, most with logistical support by Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE). Getting to other areas is logistically difficult, expensive and typically requires a sizable team for safety purposes.
Getting There
Most folks going to climb in Antarctica reach the continent by plane. Flights usually originate in South Africa, South America or New Zealand. Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE) runs the majority of flights to the Vinson area via South America.
Shipborne trips typically leave from South America and go to the Antarctic Peninsula. Pelagic Expeditions runs small, exploratory boat trips to areas on the Peninsula and also to South Georgia Island.
