Description
The Chiwaukum Range is a talusy schist-granite ridge running north south from approximately the town of Gaynor on Highway 2 to Icicle Creek. The territory is classic eastern Cascades, with little brush, a desert atmosphere, and ponderosa pines covering the slopes. Many of the peaks are of considerable elevation, but are moderately sloped enough that they are easily scrambled. Not too many huge faces exist in the Chiwaukums but there's plenty of potential for the hiker and scrambler. A standout peak is Snowgrass Mountain, which harbors a a few off the scattered glacier remnants in this subrange.
