Access Issue: Restrictions January 1 - April 30 Details

Special Closure Order #03-05-05-18-002 (found here: fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DO…) prohibits travel more then 400' off of established trails due to Bighorn Sheep lambing season. This order appears to be valid until September 20th, 2019.

Description

Finger Rock Canyon is named for one of the most recognizable features in the Santa Catalina Mountains, visible from most of Tucson. It lies immediately west of Pontatoc Canyon, and the two share a trailhead. Aside from the bouldering along the trail, anything you climb here should be considered backcountry.

Finger Rock Canyon is allegedly home to the only remaining population of bighorn sheep in the Santa Catalinas, and dogs are not permitted here at any time.

Getting There

From Tucson, drive north on Swan, past River Road and past Sunrise.

Turn left (west) on E. Skyline Drive. Go about a mile west on Skyline.

Turn right (north) on Alvernon Way.

Continue north on Alvernon Way until you get to a signed parking lot for the Finger Rock Trail on the left hand side of the road. This parking lot is gated in such a way that you can leave it at any time, but can only enter it during the day. You need a permit from the Pima County Parks and Recreation Department to park your car there overnight.

On the main trail there is an intersection for Finger Rock Trail - left and Pontatoc Ridge trail - right. Choose.
