Description
A lesser-known climbing destination in Southeast Asia with a lot of hidden gems for both route developers and climbers alike. From Aceh in the west to West Papua in the east, Indonesia has a wealth of climbing treasures to be developed. Unfortunately, detailed information about climbing routes in Indonesia is not publicly available. The best way to find out about the crags is to connect with local climbers.
Java Island has the densest routes in the country. The closest crag from Jakarta is Klapa Nunggal, but if you are willing to travel a bit farther, it's worth checking Citatah. In Yogyakarta, Siung Beach and ParangNdog are classic climbing areas, but the coastal environment is hostile to non-titanium fixed protections. Alternatively, Nglanggeran is a great destination for sport climbing and bouldering that's far from the ocean. A newly developed area in Central Java, Watu Gribig, is a great destination for climbing in a cooler climate. Lastly, East Java offers great climbing destinations.
Getting There
There are many international airports across the country, but the most frequently visited are in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bali. The most efficient way to travel long-distance between places is by air. Traveling by train is the second-best option in Java. Renting cars will give you more flexibility and privacy to go around.
