HUMAN WASTE Human waste is one of the major issues plaguing Red Rocks. The Las Vegas Climbers Liaison Council and the AAC provides free "wag bags" in several locations (Black Velvet, First Pullout, Kraft Mtn/Bouldering, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor). These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out - consider bringing one to be part of your kit (just like your rope and shoes and lunch) no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly (do not throw them in the toilets at the parking area).
Description
The Kraft Boulders are located before the Red Rocks Visitors center outside of the Calico Basin residential area. Hundreds of problems from V0 and up! The very first boulder is The Cube and it is hard to miss considering its size. Kraft has become the most popular bouldering area in Red Rock due to its concentration of quality boulders, especially in the single-digit range.
The area is one of the lowest elevation sectors in Red Rock and is generally quite exposed to sun (and wind), making it a popular destination in the winter. The large variety of boulders allow you to climb in the shade or sun almost all day if you can be flexible about your choice of problem.
IMPORTANT: Waste bags are provided by the Las Vegas Climbers Liaison Council in order to reduce human waste issues at the crags and boulders. Please feel free to take one, use as directed, and dispose of it in any trash receptacle. Please do not leave them lying around, and do not throw them in the toilets at the parking areas. The project was funded primarily by the American Alpine Club's Cornerstone Conservation Grant, with additional funding from the Access Fund and Mountain Gear. Please do your part to be a good steward of this amazing climbing area.
The sub-areas are labelled from left to right when approaching from the parking lot (west to east).
Getting There
From Vegas, take highway 159 towards the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center.
Take the right turn onto Calico Basin Road before the visitor center. You'll wind through a small neighborhood. Stay on the main, paved road, taking a series of turns leading to the parking lot. The road dead ends and there is a parking lot on the left, the Kraft Mountain parking lot. Park here, or somewhere down the street if the lot is full. Be sure to avoid parts of the road that have driveways or no parking signs.
Take the Kraft Mountain Loop trail, which is just behind the park sign (and where you see a dog poop bag holder) that leads to the boulders. There is a separate branch of the trail further down the parking lot that is more direct for accessing (01) West Cluster.
Access Alert
There are boulders in this area with archeological significance. The Birthing boulder is a particularly notable example. There are trailside posts marking the boulder and heritage site. Please be mindful of rock art and be aware that it is illegal to climb within 50' of petroglyphs. Note that the BLM is considering possible closures in this area, and being mindful of access issues can help keep the boulder open for climbing.
