The first few miles of the Matanuska glacier are on private property. Please respect the rules of the Glacier Resort so everyone can enjoy access. They are very nice people so you will have no problems at all. matanuskaglacier.com
Description
Matanuska Glacier is a great place to escape to when you are having ice cravings in the middle of summer. With very easy access and all the ice you want to climb it is a very fun place. The weather is nice and cool in the summer and in the winter can be very very cold. The weekends bring out the tourist and the Anchorage crowd. If you go during the week you will probably have the place all to yourself.
Getting There
From Anchorage take the Glenn Highway (Highway 1) all the way through Palmer and past Chickaloon to Glacier Park Resort. It is right at a 100 mile drive and takes 2-2.5 hours. Getting closer to the park, there will be signs that are easy to spot and the turn off should be obvious. Turning right onto the dirt road, you'll notice a few signs posted about private property and unsafe road conditions. Ignore these, the road is fine. Just follow the arrows marked 'glacier' instead.
You must pay a day pass fee and a camping fee if you want to stay there overnight. Regular Admission is $30 per person. Alaskan residents, Military, and 65+ are $25 and children are $10-15. Overnight camping is $25 per person in addition to the access fee. You need approval to climb off trail unguided, so be ready to show employees your gear and competence before heading out.
