Description
The Pink Towers of Houston Park Wilderness are a collection of steep climbable fins, blocks and mounds in Sierra Madre Range just west of the continental divide and about 4 miles south of Green Mountain. There are about a dozen gear climbs here on the steep sound rock of Archean granite gneiss likely of fine grained meta rhyolite origin as there are some bedding planes having similar orientations. The 80- 100 feet cracks are often featured with face holds. There are no fixed summit anchors so the rappels are from webbing around horns etc. The climbable faces of the cliffs face east and their summits are just below and west of the continental divide ridge so sunrises and sunsets are latter rising and earlier setting than normal.
This place has a short climbing season that is best from Independence Day to Labor Day.
There is a perennial stream just north for satisfying your filtered water needs.
The routes were pioneered by Jeb Steward, Ben Boykin, Woody Barmore and Heidi Barmore eons ago.
