Special Closure Order #03-05-05-18-002 (found here: fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DO… ) prohibits travel more than 400' off of established trails due to Bighorn Sheep lambing season.
Description
A great hiking trail with nice city views that also has some decent climbing. Pontatoc Canyon is immediately east of Finger Rock Canyon, and is home to a number of old backcountry trad routes as well as some scattered bouldering.
Getting There
From Tucson, drive several miles north on Swan, past River Road and past Sunrise.
Turn left (west) on E. Skyline Drive and go about a mile west on Skyline.
Turn right (north) on Alvernon Way.
Continue north on Alvernon Way until you get to a signed parking lot for the Finger Rock Trail on the left hand side of the road. This parking lot is gated in such a way that you can leave it at any time, but can only enter it during the day. You need a permit from the Pima County Parks and Recreation Department to park your car there overnight.
On the main trail there is an intersection for Finger Rock Trail - left and Pontatoc Ridge trail - right. Choose.
